The Reason Behind the Race

As I sit on the back porch of the AIM base attempting to appreciate the cold before we fly to Costa Rica in the morning, it feels about right to reflect on the steps of the journey that brought me here.

I’ve served on 3 mission trips to Honduras, where I had the privilege of forming friendships with the sweetest kids at the Miqueas 6.8 orphanage. Those kids still have a special place in my heart, and somehow I always suspected that the impact of those trips wouldn’t end there.

As much as I loved the creativity of communicating without a shared language, I promised myself I would learn Spanish. So I did! In college, I majored in Industrial Engineering and minored in Spanish — confident that although this wasn’t a major-aligned minor, this was the next step for me.

As my 4-year plan stretched to become a 4.5-year plan, I began to wonder how best to use this spring semester. I could start my full-time job the month after graduation, or I could push my start date back to the summer to make time for a mission trip — if it was even possible to find an affordable trip that aligned with my timeframe, was organized and safe, and focused on Spanish-speaking countries. As I researched possibilities, I stumbled across the AIM World Race Semesters trip and quickly learned that God had checked off all my boxes. So I took a step of faith and committed to the trip.

It’s so interesting to look back at how God has guided me in this journey, and I hope to continue to be sensitive to His nudges far beyond these three months.

Catch ya in Costa Rica!
